To Singapore With Love

Never got to post about my Singapore trip last year. Still too little time to spend on blogging so instead, I'm posting a slide show of the pictures I took.

Balitang K: The Reunion Part 2

It was to be a bigger reunion, but at the last minute, the BK oldies suddenly could not make it so it was Millette, Eve, and myself together again at the blessing of Eve's Kybie Commercial Complex. Good thing Ruthie was there to add color to the "reunion."

Eve, Ruthie, Jeng, Ate Milette, and Lola Ems.

Had kaldereta, barbecue, an assortment of grilled fish, and noodles (from Orchids Motel) at the newly-opened Egay's Grill next door - owned by Egay, the brother of Eve.

We were tripping on food the whole day - we had chicharon, tikoy, overflowing coffee, quail eggs, nuts, and many more!

We tripped on ourselves, too! Hahaha! Hello, Kokum?

(All pictures diligently grabbed/stolen from Eve's blog.)

Balitang K: The Reunion Part 1

Guess who's in town?

None other than our good friend and former colleague at then the nation's #1 news magazine show, Balitang K - the ever bubbly, Millette Burgos, also known as Kutilpa of the The Missing Link and MB's House of Blues blogspots, who arrived from Singapore on Wednesday.

Had coffee with her at Megamall before I brought her to Kokum's house of song (the Stickdreams office). Here she is posing with Eve.

And with me, of course.

We had dinner after at Capisce! in Metrowalk, since we thought we all wanted some peace and quiet. But then, a group of not-so-young musicians came on stage and ruined it all. So much for peace and quiet!

Capped the night with coffee at Starbucks. Too bad I had to leave early since it was my sister's birthday. (Will post pictures of the birthday celebration soon as my sister-in-law sends them.)

Needless to say, we had fun talking and keeping abreast of each others' lives. We will see each other again today, Saturday, at the blessing of Eve's commercial complex. Then later, we're heading out to meet some of our other former colleagues in Balitang K.

To Tiya Millette, it was great to see you again. Hope you had fun with us, and of course, with your dear old Popoy, hubby, Raymond. Hehe.

See you in Singapore in March!

Resurrection

After weeks of separation, my laptop and I are now happily reunited. It crashed around December so I sent it to e-Base (which has the nicest and most technically adept staff) and they replaced the damaged 120gb hard drive with a more spacious 160gb disk.

Also added 1gHz of RAM, so my formerly Jurassic laptop now runs much faster.

I lost many files - around 50gb worth, mostly movies downloaded from Limewire and converted from DVDs - but that's easily remedied. What's more important is that it's now back in action and I can go back to my normal life.

Maybe I will even get to post the long overdue pictures of Singapore and the two Bohol trips from last year, plus Christmas and New Year and our new house in Bulacan.

Ugh! Finally.

Updates

My laptop is down and I have not been able to blog. I was able to use it last on Friday at the Philippine Airlines office at the Centennial Airport. I was having my ticket to Bohol rebooked and thought I'd check my email while waiting for my number to be called. When I got home and turned it back on, it went into automatic disk checking, and it has been doing that (and only that) since. I'm having it fixed right away so I could go on with my life.

As of today, I have the following pending posts:

  • The Bohol Vacation
  • The Singapore Trip
  • The Bohol Trip for The Happy Sun charity
I have drafts of the Singapore entries already and will do my best to post them (and the other pending entries) within the week, before the Christmas rush sets in. In the last two weeks I have gained so much insight and there is just so much to share. My cup is filled to the brim and I am close to overflowing.

Busy busy busy.

Touchdown Manila!

Just got home. There is so much to tell, so many stories to share but for now I am beat. Late night flight and barely forty winks caught.

Suffice it to say that I have found a home in Singapore.

Exciting times ahead.

Touchdown!

Was at the airport early for my flight to Singapore.

Not that I was excited to leave. It was my first time and I thought that if there was going to be any problem or confusion, then at least I'd have time to fix it.

But everything went smoothly. Check in went fine. No problems at Immigration. Smooth.

Plane landed at exactly 11:50 pm tonight. Was at Immigration by 12:25 am. Out the airport by 12:45. At my friend Aileen's house by 1:15.

Met her family, had coffee with her and her hubby, and talked with them about TV, mutinies, politics, prosperity, religion, and the state of the Philippine nation (wow) until about 4:30 am.

As of press time, I have pretty much settled in at Zaq's room. (Aileen was much too kind to let me sleep in her son's room.) I have also set up my Singapore SIM card which will allow me to reach my contacts here more easily. Although I may still need to reconfigure it a bit.

From the Philippines, I can be reached by SMS through my Globe (+639172441221) and Smart (+639217714071) numbers, which are both on roaming. I can also be reached through my Singapore number (+6597789600) while I am here.

D-Day

Destiny's Day has finally arrived. I do not know what awaits me there but I am most excited to find out. To all who have encouraged, pushed, prayed for, and helped me towards this end, I thank you with all my heart.

God is good and don't we know it.

Vincerò!

"My dream is to spend my life doing what I feel I was born to do."
- Paul Potts, winner of the first series of Britain's Got Talent

A member of one of the e-groups I am subscribed to recently posted a link to Paul Potts' audition video to the show, Britain's Got Talent. I saw the video for the first time today, and it got me crying. Many times.

Tomorrow, I take my first step outside into the bigger world. And like Paul Potts, my dream is to spend my life doing what I feel I was born to do.

This is what I was born to do. And so I will do it.

All'alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!

At daybreak, I will succeed!

Ready 2GO

It was 2 and a half hours past the deadline, and I've bitched on the phone several times already at the customer service representative. But when the parcel from 2GO finally arrived, all the anxieties, indignation, and the restlessness faded into oblivion.

My passport has finally arrived.

I am now officially a citizen of the world.

Now all I gotta do is pack my bags and make sure that I have Leaving on a Jet Plane ready to play on my iPod.

Exodus

KALIBO. 7:30 A.M. Having breakfast with my Technical Supervisor, Daryle, at the Inn's cafe. We're talking about ghosts and spirits - poor choice of topic over breakfast, I know, but we kind of realized we shared similar or related haunting experiences last night at the room that we stayed in. (Will tell you more about these experiences in a separate post.)

This morning, we're taking a short break from the Boracay stories so I could share with you first my experience last week at the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) in Manila.

I went to re-apply for my passport and thought of saving extra by not having a travel agency do it for me. So I set a date and braved the commute and the long lines that I would expect to face there.

But nothing prepared me for this.

It seemed to me like the whole nation decided to go on an exodus to flee the oppressive Egyptians. It felt like I was face to face with the mass of humanity.

It was terrible. The line snaked for what seemed like a kilometer within the basketball court of this government office. But I said to myself, I need this, and fell in line with the rest of the world. This line was 2 and a half hours long.

And that was only the first part of the whole process. Outside the gate of the main building, there was another line. It took about 30 minutes to get inside.

When I got in, I realized this was going to take a little less longer than the first one. There were about 25 windows servicing all the applications, as opposed to the 6 or so at the basketball court. The room was air-conditioned, so it was a little more comfortable for everyone.

I thought to myself, this will be over soon.

I was only about 3 or 4 persons away from getting the 2nd part of the application (there were 4) out of the way.

Or so I thought. When I got to the window, the lady told me I was in the wrong line and had to go down to the other end of the room to have my application pre-processed.

I first applied for a passport in 2005 but was not able to immediately claim it. It turns out the DFA destroys unclaimed passports to keep them from being used for other purposes by other individuals. It made sense to me when I was first told about it. But at this point - at this precise moment - it made no difference to me. It meant I had to line up... again!

No choice. I had to respect the applicants who had lined up at these windows (the right ones) before me. It took another hour.

Outside there was another line. (Surprise, surprise!) It lead to the auditorium, where the last 2 parts of the application were going to happen.

As expected, the mass of humanity that welcomed me at the basketball court was there to greet me again. But somehow, the whole scene looked different.

Maybe because they - all of us - knew we were nearing the end of suffering.

Or maybe it was the nicely done, high-ceiling, well ventilated, air-conditioned auditorium. Or the fact that everyone in the hall, including me, realized we were all getting closer and closer to our much-sought-after exile out of the country.

And so we waited. And waited. And waited. And after another hour and a half, I got through the whole process. All in all, it took about 5 and a half hours. I was on my way home a little before 5pm.

Next week, my passport will be delivered, and I will begin another journey. I am taking one big step into the unknown. And I can't say I am not excited.

In a few weeks, who knows, I might get to see the same mass of humanity lining up before me at the airport. Whether we care to admit it or not, a mass exodus is happening before our eyes.

And I am not about to get left behind.

Last Chapter

Today is officially my last day at GMA. Here's to 3 wonderful years working with great people in a great company!

With Leo Sanchez, my boss of 3 years. On break in Boracay. Thanks for all the opportunities, the mentoring, and most of all, the friendship.

Early years at GMA. With Noli and Aileen, during an editing session for JSR.

On coverage in Bohol to do a story on seahorses.

At the JSR/KMJS cubicle, circa 2005.

Will miss the yosi breaks at the gazebo. Here with our former PC, Tetet, some time 2005.

Ethel before take. At the mall show of Show Ko! Pasiklaban ng Bayan, one of the first shows I handled.

With my ever-loyal, ever-hardworking, ever-beautiful Production Administrator, Gemma, at our newly assigned cubicle.

With the Balik-Bayan staff on pizza break.

With one of my EPs, Jacel, on yosi break at the 5th floor.

With Jane, on the road to Tagaytay for Leo's birthday celebration.

At my new cubicle.

The ladies of Q. Ganda!

My mum, posing with Joyce Jimenez, at the coffee shop on the 4th floor.

Great staff - the most creative, most loyal, most hardworking, most fun bunch of people you will ever meet.

Here's to endless post mortem and brainstorming sessions!

And loads of scripts, reports, and paperwork!

Ah, and the presentations! Woohoo!

We work hard, we play hard.

With my volleyball teammates and friends, Addy, Ali and Dante.

Many wonderful memories

many wonderful times

with many wonderful friends.

Today, the last chapter unfolds.

Tomorrow, a new set of challenges arises.

To the friends and family I have made in GMA, thank you for making my 3-year stay worth every while. I love you all.

The Chronicler's Creed

Where there's water and sun, where there are friends to see or new people to meet, where there's something new to learn, experience, or do, where there's life, there I will be.

LA POESÍA

Y fue a esa edad... Llegó la poesía
a buscarme. No sé, no sé de dónde
salió, de invierno o río.
No sé cómo ni cuándo,
no, no eran voces, no eran
palabras, ni silencio,
pero desde una calle me llamaba,
desde las ramas de la noche,
de pronto entre los otros,
entre fuegos violentos
o regresando solo,
allí estaba sin rostro
y me tocaba.

And it was at that age... Poetry arrived
in search of me. I do not know, I do not know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I do not know how or when,
no, they were not voices, they were not
words, nor silence,
but from a street I was summoned,
from the branches of night,
abruptly from the others,
among violent fires
or returning alone,
there I was without a face
and it touched me.
