What is a Life Coach?

We've seen them on TV - the likes of Oprah, Dr. Phil, or Rhonda Britten from Starting Over. They are the new breed of gurus on TV that people listen to and turn to for advice on anything from managing stress and recovering from trauma and bad relationships, to setting life goals and achieving them. They're called life coaches. And life coaching is now considered a profession.

I lifted the following definition of a life coach from about.com.

These new professionals deal with relatively healthy people who want to improve their lives in specific ways, such as changing careers, finding a healthy relationship, taking their business to a new level, losing weight or deepening their self-understanding, for example. They deal with stress management as well as time management, goal setting and other key areas of change to help their clients lead more balanced lives that better reflect clients’ personal values and priorities. It differs from therapy in that the focus is more on the present and future than the past, more on goals and behaviors than emotions and emotional patterns, and there is a more equal balance of power between the coach and client than between the typical therapist and client. Also Known As: Personal Coach

- Elizabeth Scott, M.S., About.com Guide

I'm lucky to be friends with one such professional, Alvin Chingcuangco. He's always been an engaging conversationalist so it came as no surprise when he told me he's now a licensed coach. Good onya, Alvin! And good for us. Haha.

If you or your friends ever need the services of a professional life coach, just tell me. I'll be glad to hook you up with Alvin.

Cheers!

  2. I have to tip it towards wikipedia

"Life coaching is a future-focused practice with the aim of helping clients determine and achieve personal goals. Life coaches use multiple methods that will help clients with the process of setting and reaching goals. Coaching is not targeted at psychological illness and coaches are neither therapists nor consultants."

But you know what the problem with that one is? That is doesn't REALLY capture what a coach does... its too vague!

    Thanks for the read G

    Cheers

The Chronicler's Creed

Where there's water and sun, where there are friends to see or new people to meet, where there's something new to learn, experience, or do, where there's life, there I will be.

LA POESÍA

Y fue a esa edad... Llegó la poesía
a buscarme. No sé, no sé de dónde
salió, de invierno o río.
No sé cómo ni cuándo,
no, no eran voces, no eran
palabras, ni silencio,
pero desde una calle me llamaba,
desde las ramas de la noche,
de pronto entre los otros,
entre fuegos violentos
o regresando solo,
allí estaba sin rostro
y me tocaba.

And it was at that age... Poetry arrived
in search of me. I do not know, I do not know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I do not know how or when,
no, they were not voices, they were not
words, nor silence,
but from a street I was summoned,
from the branches of night,
abruptly from the others,
among violent fires
or returning alone,
there I was without a face
and it touched me.
